Patrick Reyntiens
Patrick Reyntiens has been associated
with stained glass since 1951 after
studying at the Edinburgh College of
Art. He was recognized as the leading
modern stained glass artist in the UK
and back in 1976 was awarded the Order
of the British Empire for his service to
the arts. He and his wife bought
Burleighfield House, a small county home
on eight acres of land and turned it
into a small independent art school. He
taught stained glass and his wife taught
drawing and painting.
Reyntiens has a large number of special
commissions, in the US, the UK, Ireland
and Europe and has lectured widely. His
work with John Piper brought much
attention to the successful
collaboration between two major artists.
Together they are responsible for, among
others, the well known baptistery window
in Coventry Cathedral and a wall of
windows (to replace war damaged ones) at
St. Margaret’s Church which is adjacent
to Westminster Abbey in London.
Reyntiens' name is well known for
writing an early how-to book. The
Technique of Stained Glass is very
complete, geared to a professional
approach and is considered by many to be
the best of its kind. In addition, he
wrote The Beauty of Stained Glass in
1990 which is an historical overview and
his most recent book from 2002 is on
Marc Chagall's stained glass, called
"Chagall Glass at Chichester and Tudeley"
published by University College
Chichester.
