Rita Shimelfarb-Painting Without a Map
July 9th - 10th, 9:00am - 4:30pm
Service Description
Beginner/Intermediate level A two-day glass painting workshop designed to allow the freedom and structure for glass painters with some previous glass painting experience to experiment with painting in a non-traditional manner. This class will be a departure from a traditional approach to glass painting, as most of painting and shading will be done while the paint is wet. Students will walk away with 4 painted pieces of glass, 3 of which will be fired twice and the last one requiring only one firing. One piece will be a concentration of techniques around color enameling and reverse graphic "tattooing". We will do one layer in lavender oil and second layer in water-based paint medium. Two pieces will focus on foreground and background elements. Both will be done with propylene glycol, one to two layers each. Last piece will be a detailed painting of a face done in one layer and over multiple days. Tracing will only be allowed for the face painting, and only briefly. The rest of the painting is encouraged to be done free-hand. Provided by instructor at no additional cost: glass, paint, nitrile gloves, glass picks and swabs, mediums, PDF of class curriculum with detailed list of materials and techniques used. Students are asked to bring their favorite brushes for painting. Additional brushes may be available for trial / purchase from the instructor. If anyone is allergic to surgical-style nitrile gloves, please bring your gloves. Respirators or face masks are encouraged during some phases in class painting.
