Service Description

Single Day Workshop, Tuesday In this class we’ll review the methods and philosophies used by stained glass conservators, starting with a look at guidelines established by the Corpus Vitrearum and American Institute of Conservation that can help direct your work and your decision making. Learn what to expect when you’re working on a project with an architect, consultant, and other specialized contractors. We’ll also go over a range of conditions you might encounter in an old window, how to assess and document them, and how to plan an appropriate course of treatment, including how much to intervene and which techniques to use. You’ll learn how to describe various conditions and troubleshoot the source of problems. We’ll also discuss approaches for deteriorated paint, cracking or separating lead, sagging panels, cracked glass, and how to amend previous attempts at restoration that may have failed. If you are confident in your bench skills and craftsmanship, and have dabbled in some repairs, but would like to take your skills to the next level, this is the class for you. The instructor will bring many samples of relevant materials and present several case studies of conserved windows, with plenty of time for group discussion. There will be a very limited amount of hands-on work, but the class will be information-dense and students are encouraged to bring a notebook or sketchbook to take notes and make diagrams.
