Thursday August 6th 8:30AM - 12:30PM Hotel Half Day Workshop How Knowing Why You're Doing Something Matters As Much As How It's Done Description: This workshop demystifies the chemistry of stained glass conservation, focusing on how materials behave and interact over time. Understanding the why behind treatments supports more confident decision-making and effective problem-solving. Chris Chesney: Born Glasgow 1953 Kicked out of school in 1968. Having served an apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner left Scotland in 1971 and moved to London. Worked in various capacities up to contracts manager in the shop-fitting and construction industries until 1979 when a firm association began with Patrick Martin AGMP at Glass Mountain Studios specializing in stained glass. Moved to Northumberland and started Iona Art Glass in 1986 Achieved BSMGP Conservation Accreditation in 1994 Achieved ICON PACR Accreditation in 2000 Became PACR Assessor 2002 and served as a mentor from 2004 After a successful joint venture with Rainbow Glass Studios at Marischal college in Aberdeen in 2010 became conservation director of Rainbow Glass Studios. Chair of ICON Stained Glass Group from 2004-2014 Worked as an assessor for V&A/ICON Care of Collections Conservation Technician Diploma. A regular lecturer at ICON Stained Glass conferences throughout the UK. 2019 moved Iona Art Glass into new conservation unit with increased facilities for the care and conservation of Medieval Glass. 2025 retired from glass to further my interest in gardening, fly fishing and Glasgow Rangers Football Club. Qualifications: A Level Chemistry A Grade NVQ Level 4 in Operations Management TDLB D32, D33 & 34 assessor and verifier awards PACR Conservation Accreditation. Workshops are spots are booked on a “first come, first served” basis. ***Scholarship applicants should register and pay for conference and workshop in order to secure a spot, and if applicant is awarded a scholarship, they will be reimbursed for the awarded amount. If you are not awarded a scholarship, you also have the option for a refund in full.***
